Belen “hometown of David” (Arabic” ”” (La’m Bayt) “house of meat” Hebrew” ”” (le’em Bet / Bet la’em, Tiberian Be ‘you ‘em / Be’ l”em “house of bread” Beth Lahamu Canaanites “Lahamu house of God”) is a town south of Jerusalem (about 9 miles south), located in the Judean Hills, in West Bank. It is currently administered by the Palestinian Authority. Its geographical coordinates are: 31A 42 ‘N 35 12′ E. Its population is around 30,000 inhabitants, most of whom are Christians.
The city has great significance for all Christians and Muslims to be the birthplace of Jesus of Nazareth according to the gospels of Luke and Matthew. The Israeli government has surrounded the city walls and steps of control, this has provoked a great decrease in tourism.
