Hegesippus of Jerusalem
Hegesippus of Jerusalem (d. Jerusalem, ca. 180) is an early Christian writer, considered the first historian of the Church.
Lived 20 years in Rome during the pontificate of Pope Aniceto and Eleuterio, faced the Gnostic theory that emerged within the Church. The Tradition indicates that in the course of his travels visited the major Christian centers of the West and East and noted with great satisfaction that all heresies came from individuals, but that none of the churches and episcopal sees had fallen into error.
In the year 177 came to Jerusalem where he died an old man. Within the Catholic Church is considered the father of church history because it published the first list of Roman bishops from Peter to Simon Aniceto. Only a few chapters are preserved of the five books of the History of the Church that wrote and extending from the Passion of Christ until the time of the author.
